Toys That Startle

If a toy moves, it’s an instant hit with my son. If it makes noise, however, he has to warm up to it. If it does both, well, there’s no telling how he’ll react. This year he got a tricycle and he loved it immediately. Right away, he wanted to get on it and ride it around the living room. We were smart to give it to him last or he wouldn’t have been interested in the rest of his gifts. He also got a Cozy Coupe and it was the same story; he played with it right away and it was an instant hit. When he got a laughing and talking Elmo doll, however, he needed some time to warm up to it. At first he would not touch the Elmo and leaned back when Elmo talked. He had to watch us play with it for a while before he trusted it. Once he decided Elmo was an okay guy, though, he really loved playing with him. He even snuggled him at bed time.

One toy really scared him and he still hasn’t quite warmed up to it. It’s the Fisher-Price Sing-A-Ma-Jig. Personally, I love this toy and I want to steal it so I can play with it. It is so darn cute! But I understand why my son is a little scared of it. When you squeeze its belly it sings and its mouth moves. Well this particular version of the toy has a little tooth in its mouth. My son instinctively stuck his finger in the toy’s mouth while it was singing, and even though it didn’t hurt him, it pinched his finger just enough to scare him. He almost touched it again today, but then he changed his mind. He doesn’t trust it. I think he’ll love it by next week, but we’ll just have to see.
