Have you seen the commercial that features a father and son indulging in a midnight snack of Oreos and milk? The twosome sneak into a dark kitchen in the dead of night, and just as they are about to get their sugar rush on, the boy grabs his dad’s arm and refuses to let him devour his cookie until the clock strikes twelve. At that precise moment the kid releases his dad’s arm and wishes him a “Happy Father’s Day!”
I’m not sure I would categorize cookies as a manly snack, but then again, who wants to grill up a T-bone steak at midnight? If breakfast in bed is considered an ideal gift for Mother’s Day, then what are dads left to enjoy? Dinner in a recliner?
If you are looking for a manly meal to whip up for your dad this Sunday, then think meat and potatoes. The following picks are father favorites here in Wisconsin where Bratwurst and potatoes reign supreme:
GRILLED BEER BRATS
Ingredients:
1 large aluminum foil baking pan
4 bottles (12-ounce) beer
1 stick butter
2 medium size yellow onions, sliced
2 pounds sauerkraut
12 to 16 brats
12 to 16 brat buns
Directions:
Place pan on grill over indirect heat.
Add beer, sauerkraut, butter and onions.
Heat for about 45 minutes or until onions start to get soft.
Grill brats until done.
When they are done, place them in foil pan to keep warm.
Serve brats on buns and top with onions and sauerkraut.
