Tying Knots on Trees

This past week my family and I decided to get an early start on the upcoming holiday season. We got in a car the day before Thanksgiving and selected a Christmas tree for our home. This is the first year we were going to have a real tree in our home for the holiday season. Last year we happily purchased a three foot tall fake tree with lights. There is a photograph somewhere of my holding our very young son in front of the tree as he stared wide eyed looking at the small lights. As he is older this year we wanted to get a larger tree to mark the season as something out of the ordinary.

This also, then, marked the first time we would have the task of selecting a tree, getting it home, setting it up and doing all other things associated with having a real tree in the house. The largest battle was easily the task of getting the tree (once purchased) attached to the car.

Our battle was quite wonderful. We don’t have a rack on the top of our tiny car so we’d need some rope. We got the tree on top of the car and quickly fastened it to the hand holds on the inside of the door through open windows. My wife was a great help in this task and our son looked on from his car seat. Once we had it secure we realized (ta da!) we couldn’t open the car doors as we’d secured the tree through the doors. We climbed in the windows to complete our journey home. The rest was uneventful. Tree Tip: Don’t tie yourself out of your own car.
