Unique Window Treatments

These window treatments provide privacy, and light control, but they also provide storage.

Shoe Bag Window Cover

Okay, this one might sound a little strange at first, but you’ll see where I’m going with it. The best part about it is that it’s super simple to put together. For an average size window, you will need six canvas shoe bags. Select the flat, sixteen-pocket design.

Sew two shoe bags together side by side. Cut off the tops of the second and third pair, and sew the second and third pairs the same way. Next, sew the second pair to the bottom of the first, and the third pair to the bottom of the second. No hemming or rod pockets required.

To hang the shade, simply use the holes at the top of the top bags. Slip rope or twine (clothesline works great) through one end hole and tie a knot. Wrap the rope over the curtain rod, and then slip through another hole, pulling tight. Repeat until you reach the other end then tie another knot.

If you prefer not to have the curtain rod showing, you can remove it and wrap the rope around a decorative rod or a 1″x 2″ either of which can be hung in its place. To make the window treatment more interesting, let your child decorate it with paint pens.

Sew Your Own Pocket Curtain

You can also sew your own pocket curtain. You can use any fabric you like, but a flat sheet that matches the bedding is perfect. For an average window, a twin sheet will work.

Remove the side seams from the top edging of the sheet and use that part for your rod pocket. Cut 18″ from the bottom of the sheet, and hem the rough edge. Cut the excess into squares or rectangles the size you want the pockets to be. Fold over each edge, press into place or apply hem tape, and sew onto the curtain (it helps to mark the placement of the pockets first).

With either one of these projects, all it takes is a few stitches to create a great window treatment and a fun spot for your kids to store their secret treasures.
