computer lab Perhaps you didn’t make it to RootsTech 2012. You could still attend a genealogy class, workshop, or event that is taking place closer to where you live! Doing so is a great way to learn more about genealogy, and to meet people who love genealogy as much as you do. Here are some upcoming genealogy events that will be happening this week.

On February 6, 2012, the Jefferson County Genealogical Society, which is located in Port Townsend, Washington, will present the second part of a five-week genealogy course. The course is called “Introduction to Family Research History”. The class provides an overview of basic steps for successful genealogy research. The class will begin at 1:00 in the afternoon and will end at 3:30 in the afternoon.

Also on February 6, 2012, the Scottdale Public Library, located in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, will begin a series of genealogy sessions. The first class will focus on how patrons can begin searches in the Heritage Quest genealogy program. These sessions are for any age group, for beginners, or for anyone who wants help tracing their family tree.

On February 7. 2012, the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History, which is located in Mount Airy, North Carolina, will have a genealogy workshop that is being held in collaboration with the Surry County Genealogical Society.

The class will be taught by Esther Johnson. The class is for people who are interested in tracing their roots, and learning how to work through that process. Registration is required, and space is limited to ten participants.

Also on February 7, 2012, the National Archives in Boston, located in Waltham, Massachusetts, will hold a free workshop about researching African-American genealogy. They are doing this in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, and Black History Month. The workshop is for both novice and experienced family historians.

On February 8, 2012, the Citrus Heights Community Clubhouse, located in Citrus Heights, California, will host a meeting of the Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society.

The event will be hosted by genealogy instructor Glenda Lloyd. She will show you how to create an inventory of your family keepsakes using photography, measurement, and written history. Bring your family keepsake or collection with you. It will start at 7:00 in the evening and will end at 8:30 in the evening.

On February 11, 2012, the Hayes Presidential Center Research Library, which is located in Fremont, Ohio, will hold a class that will provide instruction on how to use the free genealogical websites located in the Hayes Research Library. The class is sponsored by RootsMagic Inc., and it will begin at 9:30 in the morning and end at 11:30 in the morning. It includes a tour of the Hayes Library.
