Upcoming Genealogy Events – Week of February 26, 2012

taking notes You can learn a lot from a good genealogy class, workshop or event. The trick, of course, is being able to find one. Here are some upcoming genealogy events that will be happening this week. One might be near where you live! If not, then check your local newspaper to find out about more.

On February 27, 2012, the Jefferson County Genealogical Society, which is located in Port Townsend, Washington, will present the fifth, and final, part of a five – week genealogy course. The course is called “Introduction to Family Research History”. It provides an overview of the basic steps for successful genealogy research.

On February 28, 2012, the Glenview Public Library, which is located in Glenview, Illinois, will present “Mollie’s War: For the Love of Country”. Cynthia Schaffer, daughter of Mollie Weinstein Schaffer, tells her mother’s story. Mollie became a WAC, (Women’s Army Corp), during World War II, and experienced a lifetime of adventure. This presentation will begin at 7:00 in the evening, and will include a book sale and signing.

On February 29, 2012, the Abbot Public Library, which is located in Marblehead, Massachusetts, will present “Beginner’s Genealogy and Family History”. This will be presented by Michael Brophy, who is a professional genealogy researcher. The presentation will begin at 7:00 in the evening.

On March 1, 2012, the National Archives, located in College Park, Maryland, will have a presentation called “On the Road to Freedom”. It will be presented by genealogy archives specialist Rebecca Sharp. She will discuss the records that were created by wartime superintendents of freedmen that illuminate the experiences of African – Americans during the Civil War.

On March 3, 2012, the Atrium room at Florida Southern College, which is located in Lakeland, Florida, will hold a daylong seminar that is given by George Schweitzer, a distinguished professor at the University of Tennessee. It is sponsored by the Imperial Polk Genealogical Society.

He will dress in colonial costume for his lecture “North – South Colonial Migration Routes”, and will dress as a railroad engineer for his lecture “Rivers to Trails to Roads to Canals to Trains”. He will present a lecture called “Obscure Genealogical Sources (Very Important, Rarely – Recognized Sources)”. Registration is required in order to attend the seminar.

Also on March 3, 2012, St. David School, which is located near Benson, Arizona, will hold the annual 1880’s Historic Costume Ball. The Ball will begin at 6:30 in the evening and continue through 10:00 at night. This is a fundraiser for the restoration of the historic school building. A donation of $5.00 per person is requested.
