It is always fun to take a class, attend a workshop, or participate in an event that is about your favorite hobby: genealogy! It can be interesting to learn more about the heritage of your ancestors. There are events taking place all across the United States. If you don’t see one on this list that is near where you live, then I would suggest checking out your local newspaper for more.
On January 16, 2012, the Tulsa Genealogy Society, will hold free genealogy classes at the Briar Village Shopping center, which is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. You must register if you want the opportunity to win door prizes.
“Good and Bad Internet” will start at 6:00 in the evening. This class will be lead by Janet Cottrell. Another class, called “It’s on the website, but where? How? Why?” will begin at 7:00 at night, and will end at 9:00 at night. This class will be led by Dorothy Becknell, webmaster.
On January 17, 2012, The Hoffman Center, which is located in Tillamook County, Oregon, will continue its four week genealogy course. The series is called “Introduction to Family History”, and will be instructed by Karen Merrill Martin. She has a certificate in Genealogical Studies from the National Institute of Genealogical Studies affiliated with the University of Toronto. The class will start at 2:00 in the afternoon, and end at 3:30 in the afternoon.
On January 18, 2012, the Morningside Branch Library, which is located in Port St. Lucie, Florida, will continue its genealogy series for January. Patti Kirk, who is a genealogist and local historian, will hold a class called “My Genealogy and the Internet”. This class will begin at 9:45 in the morning, and will continue through 11:45 in the morning. You must register for the class if you want to attend.
On January 19, 2012, the National Archives, which is located Waltham, Massachusetts, will have a keynote presentation given by Milton resident Thomas O’Grady. His presentation is called “Going Into Exile: Poems of the Irish Diaspora”.
This is part of their “They Came From Ireland” program. Archivist/Genealogist Walter V. Hickey will discuss researching your Irish genealogy. Elizabeth Condon will share her experiences with uncovering her family’s history in Ireland.
On January 21, 2012, the Sequoyah Museum, which is located in Vonore, Tennessee, will have Cherokee storyteller Lloyd Arneach Sr., and his daughter, Dawn Arneach. Lloyd will share stories. Dawn will help people with questions relating to genealogy research. The event will begin at 3:00 in the afternoon.
