Waiting in the World of Home Businesses

Do you remember that old saying that some situations call for “hurry up and wait”? Sometimes, operating a home business can be a perfect example of living in a state of hurry up and wait. A person can feel like she’s slogging along with a lot of things to do, but nothing is happening. Patience, and the ability to live with the wait can be quite important in the world of home business.

Try to remind yourself that just because it SEEMS as though nothing is happening, it doesn’t actually mean that nothing is happening. If you are working steadily and focusing on building your home business, things are happening. Waiting for responses from clients and customers can be sheer torture. All the while the days and weeks are passing, you start to question what you are doing and whether or not you are doing enough. It may sound like a cliché, but remember the story of the tortoise and the hare? Many times in life, succeeding is all about just staying in the race and doing your best at your own pace.

If you are someone who really needs to SEE results in order to feel productive, it might help you to come up with some ways of measuring your productivity in your home business that can help sustain your motivation when you are in one of those “waiting” periods. Tracking how many query letters you send out, or calls you make, or networking events you attend–can help you to remind yourself of all the effort you are making. Additionally, setting goals that are reasonable, as well as goals that can be evaluated on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis may also help you to feel the evolution and movement in your business efforts–even when it seems like nothing is happening.
