Warm Up Empty Corners, Part I

Empty corners can create awkward spaces in your home and they can also make a house feel less than warm and inviting. If you have empty corners or other wasted space in your home, there are lots of great ways to warm up these areas and make them part of the room.

Some corners are too small to accommodate standard pieces of furniture but too large to leave empty. These are great places to add smaller, more delicate pieces of furniture. You might be surprised by how well a small piece can stand alone.

Accent Tables

Adding a small accent table to a corner is a good start. On top, place a tall urn or vase to add height and draw the eye upward. You might want to fill the vase with tall grasses or other naturals to add even more height and interest. If your table is not particularly attractive, or does not blend well with the main space, add an eye-catching floor length tablecloth. *Check out my article on making your own accent tables, later this week.

One of a Kind Chair

If you have a great antique chair, a corner is a great place to feature it. If you don’t have something suitable, check out garage sales, thrift stores, antique shops or used furniture shops for a great one of a kind piece. If the chair doesn’t exactly fit the decor in the rest of the room, recover the seat cushion in a fabric that coordinates with the rest of the room, add a complementary throw or accent pillow, or paint the chair to make it work.

Corner Shelves

Obviously, corner shelves are designed for corners. They are available in many stylish options. For a twist, hang the shelf instead of leaving it freestanding. To warm up the area, add plants, family photos or pieces from a favorite collection to each shelf.
