Warm Up Empty Corners, Part III

This article provides a few more ways to treat empty corners and spaces. For more ideas, please check out the other articles if you missed them.

Folding Screens

You can purchase a folding screen, make your own, or dress up an existing screen. You can cover the screen with framed family photos, rich fabric, or a paint treatment. Another idea is to stencil on a design or to decoupage images from favorite prints, wallpaper, or other mediums onto the screen. If you don’t have a screen, or the corner seems too small to add a piece of furniture, try treating the walls.

Raised Stencils

Choose a stencil with a repeating pattern that can be used from the top to the bottom of the wall or make your own stencil. Use spray adhesive to attach a stencil firmly to the wall. Generously trowel on some joint compound but don’t apply it too heavily. Let it set up for a few minutes, and gently pull away the stencil. Sand away any rough areas or overlaps once the compound is dry. Paint as desired or dry brush with color for an aged effect. Extend the design about one or two feet from the corner at the top and bottom of the walls if desired.

A New Twist on Wallpaper Border

Select a wallpaper border that you like, and brush on some thinned out paint or glaze to give the paper an aged look. When it is dry, cut out shapes and images from the border and decoupage them onto the wall, creating an interesting floor to ceiling pattern. Treat both walls, or simply treat one from floor to ceiling and carry over the design onto only the top of the other wall, for a less symmetrical look.
