Was It All Just A Big Hoax?

Perhaps, I should have been a professional royal-watcher… A couple of weeks ago when the news broke that Prince William and his girlfriend of nearly five years, Kate Middleton “split” then dramatically reunited last month, my royal feelers went up. I cynically made the comment (in this blog) that the royal break up was really a carefully planned royal hoax. (For the record Valorie agreed with me.) Now it seems my super powers may finally be validated.

According to the New York Post, a veteran royal watcher is confirming that William and Kate never actually broke up in the first place. Christopher Andersen, author of “After Diana: William, Harry, Charles and the Royal House of Windsor,” said he interviewed the couple’s friends and almost no one he spoke with believed a split occurred.

What’s more, according to Andersen, there were no glaring reasons the two would end their relationship. Other royal watchers say Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth “both love Kate,” and Middleton has no skeletons in her closet that would mar a royal union.

So what happened? According to the New York Post, Andersen believes the purported split came as a result of the extensive media speculation that William and Kate were headed for the altar.

“Their closest friends believe it was all a ruse to get Britain’s voracious tabloid press off Kate’s back,” Andersen tells the Post. “William has had recurring nightmares that Kate would meet the same fate [as his mom, Princess Diana], literally chased to her death by paparazzi.”

Andersen claims, William suggested, “that they simply make it look as if the romance was completely over.” It seems the strategy worked… at least for a while. The princes made it through the all-star concert they planned to honor their mother, Princess Diana (with respective girlfriends in attendance) and now it’s back to business as usual.

“Everyone is rooting for Kate because no one wants to see William make the same mistake Charles made and pass up marrying the woman he fell in love with in the first place,” Andersen said.

So are they or aren’t they a royal couple? I guess only time will tell, but for now I plan to take a few minutes to gloat about my earlier observation (sardonically laced as it was).
