Week in Review: December 5th through December 15th

Want to know what you’ve missed in the education blog in December? Since our regular education blogger, Kaye Siders has left, we have been filling in here and there. Here is the last of a three part series to review what has been done in the education blog since the beginning of November. If you haven’t had a chance to catch up–keep reading!

Do you ever write your child’s teacher a note while you are rushing to get everything else ready for the day? Do you ever proof read your note to make sure it makes sense and is grammatically correct? If you don’t, read ’Are You a Little Rushed in the Morning’. It’s a brief compilation of actual quotes from letters written by parents. Not only will it make you chuckle, but I bet you’ll look at your notes to school twice before sending them!

You’ve likely already sent your child’s teacher a gift. . .but you can read about real gift faux pas in ‘Turning Your Gift Faux Pas Into a Gift Well Received!‘ Not only are the stories true, but I’ve also included some alternative suggestions that your child’s teacher is guaranteed to love!

Are you familiar with the idea of “school choice” in education? It refers to plans that include school vouchers, charter schools, and other ’alternative options’. It is a practice that is discouraged by the NEA and to my knowledge, all other public school advocates. In a three part series, I have discussed and given arguments for why I believe school choice is better for all schools and kids. What do you think? (Read about them here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3).

What would you do to get your kids to read more? One principal spent the night on the school roof in an effort to encourage the students in his school to read 10,000 books. Unfortunately for him, it happened to be the coldest night so far this year!

What would you do to make sure that your child gets into “the right school?” Read about my stories from moms on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and the hoops they have to jump through to get their children into New York City’s most elite schools.
