Week in Review: February 4th-9th

We had a really fun week here in Movies. Can’t decide what to rent? Take a look at the following and see what appeals to you.

Corrina, Corrina” stars Whoopi Goldberg and tells of the way one incredible housekeeper changed the lives of a widower and his daughter. A heartfelt and deeply touching movie that addresses loss and racism.

Amanda Bynes stars in “She’s the Man,” a comedy about a girl who pretends to be her twin brother in order to play on the boys’ soccer team. She wasn’t planning to fall in love with her roommate, though.

Must Love Dogs” is a romantic comedy starring Diane Lane and John Cusack as two people who have each been divorced and are now trying to move on with their lives. When they meet each other, things are strained at first, but soon their relationship becomes something very special. Read the whole review for content concerns.

What happens when a man somehow becomes the character in a novelist’s book? “Stranger than Fiction,” starring Will Ferrell and Emma Thompson, asks that very question. This hysterical and yet surprisingly thought-provoking movie is definitely one of my favorites.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” is the movie that started it all. Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley star in this swashbuckling adventure that will have you laughing one minute and shivering the next.

The Cheetah Girls” is an introduction to the preteen-set phenomenon. Four girls want to make it big in the music industry, but they don’t know how to handle the sudden success.

Jodie Foster stars in “Anna and the King,” the first all-serious version of the story of Anna Leonowens and the King of Siam. This film is breathtaking in its cinematography.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” takes a man whose half octopus and pits him against a sea spirit who’s now a woman. Who will win? That’s only one unusual plot line in this movie. Johnny Deep shines, as always, in his role of Captain Jack Sparrow, and the others do a fairly good job as well, although I didn’t think Will played as big a part in this film as he did in the first two.

It’s Amanda Bynes again in “What a Girl Wants.” Well, what does she want? A father. She’s grown up without one, and when she tracks him down, she discovers that not only is he Colin Firth (a nice discover any day) but he’s running for office, and she doesn’t really fit into his plans.

The Quiet Man” is the only older film I reviewed this week. One of John Wayne’s most famous, I failed to see the appeal in it. I’ll try another Wayne next week and see if I can catch the fever.

Two Weeks Notice” features Hugh Grant as a needy land developer and Sandra Bullock as his harassed lawyer. He calls her up day and night to ask her advice, interrupting key moments in her life, and can’t understand why she’s irritated with him. He pays her, after all. Funny Girl” launched Barbra Streisand’s acting career with a ka-boom. A nod to the real life story of comedienne Fanny Brice, this film is touching and funny. See full review for content concerns.

We ended the week with “Music and Lyrics,” another Hugh Grant film. This time he’s paired up with Drew Barrymore as they race the clock to write a hit song for a teenage diva, only to find out that there are more important things than their careers. See full review for content concerns.

This week was a lot of fun for me, and I hope you enjoyed these reviews. Now, get yourself to the rental store, already!
