Weight a Minute! — Seeking a Higher Power

I’ve held my weight steady at 264.2 all this week. Is that the weight I want? Of course not. But I was up to 269.0 at the beginning of this month, and it fluctuated up and down like crazy for the first two weeks. I’m pretty delighted that it hasn’t budged for a week. It’s progress.

Today I’d like to talk with you about a concept I have found to be invaluable in my journey. I blogged a while back about how I’ve been looking for love in all the wrong places, turning to food instead of to God or to friends and family for my comfort. I was right – but I was only part right.

I’ve been studying a marvelous book called “He Did Deliver Me from Bondage.” It’s a twelve-step program written specifically for those of the LDS faith using the Book of Mormon, and it’s really changing my outlook on my addiction. The steps in this book are the same steps used in Alcoholics Anonymous, only with a more religious outlook.

As I’ve started to look at my food addiction through this new lens, I’m feeling a great deal of peace about my journey. By turning it over to God, I feel as though I’m able to let go of the guilt and simply concentrate on healing, rather than beating myself up over every little mistake. You can’t heal while you’re picking off the scabs, and when you’re focusing on everything you’ve done wrong, that’s essentially what you’re doing – picking the scabs.

While I’m still at an unhealthy weight, I’m starting to feel like I am finally understanding what I need to do to strengthen myself from the inside out. I know that the weight loss isn’t going to be quick and easy, but I don’t feel guilty about that anymore. I need to fix the Tristi on the inside before the Tristi on the outside can start to shine, and that’s exactly what I’m working on.

I encourage you – if you’re working on weight loss, turn to the Higher Power you worship in your religion. There may not be a twelve-step book that specifically ties in to your book of scripture, but every book of scripture contains words of wisdom and support that will help you to better yourself and to realize that this is not a journey you have to take alone. Once I realized that my weight had a spiritual connection and was not just a mortal problem, I began to truly be able to heal from the inside out.
