Weight Loss for Breastfeeding Moms: Self Esteem

My self esteem has been low this week. I know I’m not alone here. This is a common problem for new mothers. Even though I know that there is a good reason for the extra weight, it is still really bothering me this week.

My low self esteem issues started this week when I downloaded some pictures from my digital camera. Now I know why I shy away from the camera. I’m bigger now than at any time of my life, other than the last trimester of pregnancy. The last thing I need is photographic evidence!

I haven’t bought any new clothes for myself since our fourth baby was born, seven months ago. I know that a few great new outfits would lift my spirits, but I just can’t seem to go shopping. The size I would need to buy would just make me feel worse. Looking at myself in the dressing room mirror wouldn’t do much for my outlook on life either.

My goal for the past few days has been to try to lift my spirits. Continuing to feel sad about my weight is not productive and will do nothing to help me achieve my weight loss goals. I need to engage in more positive self talk and stop thinking of myself in negative terms.

I will go out this week and buy some new clothes. A few new outfits will make me feel better, despite the number on the tag. When I’m wearing real clothes, and not sweats, I’ll probably feel a lot less frumpy. I know that when I look better, I feel happier and more positive.

I will focus on health and not on size. Each positive change I make in my diet and exercise routine will bring me one step closer to achieving my goal and finding the body I once had. Rather than focusing on the final result, I’ll focus on making positive changes.

What do you do to keep your self esteem high when you are trying to lose weight?
