What Does it Mean to Be Head of the Household?

What does it mean to be the head of the household? That’s the question someone raised recently in response to an earlier blog written by someone else on this site. In this blog I’m going to try and answer what it means for a marriage for someone to be the head of the household.

Let me start by saying what I don’t think it means. It doesn’t mean that one person is in charge and rules everything that happens in the marriage. I don’t believe, as the last person who commented did, that it means the head of the household’s word is law and they must always be obeyed. That sounds more like a dictatorship.

Of course it all depends for a start, if you are talking about the biblical model of the husband as head over the wife because this is only one aspect. Some people stop and only take that verse, which is taking it out of context. It’s a mistake some feminists have made to back up their argument about male domination and used as an excuse by some men to exercise control and domination. In each case they need to keep reading and see what else it says. The verses continue on to talk about the selfless love a husband is to have for his wife. As well as Ephesians 5:22-23 look at Ephesians 5:24-33,Colossians 3:19 and 1 Peter 3:7, to mention a few.

There are also many admonishments for husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church and that is sacrificial love, not commandeering, commanding love. It’s service

For me to submit to my husband is easy because I know he is not seeking to control me. He follows the biblical principal and always has my best interests at heart, just as I have his best interests at heart.

For a man to say ‘I’ve decided what I want you to do. Let me know when its done,’ is as Mick said ‘arrogance and dominion.’ It’s certainly not love. It’s not respecting your wife. It’s selfishness and domination, and all about control.

Join me tomorrow when I continue talking about this topic. I’d love to hear your input on this topic too.
