What Have You Been Doing Online?

I was messing around on-line tonight, and an annoying pop up came on the screen. It asked if I wanted to scan my computer for records of any adult sites that my computer has visited. I didn’t want to be bothered, and I know I haven’t been to any adult websites, so I went to close the pop-up with the red square in the top right corner. That always works. However, instead of closing the pop-up, it took me to the home page of the company that wanted to sell me their adult filter software. The page said that their program had performed a quick scan on our computer and had discovered 953 records of adult websites and files on our computer!

I was shocked. I couldn’t believe what the thing was telling me. I wasn’t sure if this was a gimmick for them to sell more filter programs, or if it was a legitimate scan of our system.

It offered a summary of the scan for no obligation, so I followed the link.

To my relief, what came up was file after file, and page after page of breastfeeding. Apparently, the word ‘breast’ was snagged as ‘adult’. As some of you already know, my wife has breastfed each of our children, which has been an on-going experience for the past eight and a half years. My wife has researched breastfeeding for her own benefit and curiosity, as well as to answer the questions of others about breastfeeding, or to catch up on the latest story of indignities brought down on a breastfeeding mother by an unsympathetic restaurant worker.

Anyway, I decided that my computer was completely safe. I figured that I didn’t need to buy the filter after all. The only thing anyone has looked at on our computer was nursing a baby. I think our family is safe for the time being.

But dads here is why I share the story. It is our responsibility as the men in the household to protect our families. Our computers have always been in a public location for this reason. I knew there were no adult website files of an insidious nature on our computer because that computer is never anywhere where everyone can’t see. And believe me with a family of seven in a three bedroom apartment, someone can always see. I encourage you dads to think about the safety of your homes. Just as you would take precautions against an outside intruder, take precautions against online intruders as well. Whether or not you need the said software, well, that’s up for debate!
