Valentine’s Day is less than two weeks away. The holiday falls on a Wednesday this year so you can bet that Bed and Breakfast’s around the country will see brisk business on the days leading up and following February 14th. And why not? Unlike its flashy resort cousin, the B&B is known for providing a cozy, intimate, romantic experience. Well… that is if you pick the right one.
The following are some points to remember before pulling out your credit card to book a room:
Location. When I was doing research about B&B’s I found that Fredericksburg, Texas (population 9,000) reportedly has the largest number of B&Bs per capita in the nation. With hundreds of properties to choose from in such a limited area you can bet you will secure yourself a competitive rate and likely score superior accommodations versus a part of the country that only has a scattering of B&Bs?
Not All B&B’s Are Created Equal. Generally, B&B’s have the following amenities: parking, private bath, full or continental breakfast, and daily housekeeping. Some will have added extras, including “free” toiletries, fireplaces, hot tubs, and laundry service. Consider what is most important to you and book accordingly.
B is for Breakfast. Bed and Breakfasts are called so for a reason… your stay should include a bed and the first meal of the day. The problem is that the definition of “breakfast” often differs between properties. For instance, some Bed and Breakfasts will serve up a full gourmet meal to all guests at a pre-arranged time in a dining room. Other Bed and Breakfasts offer a simple continental breakfast buffet that guests can dine on before checking out. At a traditional bed and breakfast, guests are typically offered the former. Either option offers lots of possibilities. If you are a picky eater it’s a good idea to inquire about the meal service prior to booking.
Décor. There is a common misconception among the hotel and resort crowd that Bed and Breakfasts are decorated like grandma’s house. Personally, I have yet to stay at a B&B that looked anything like my grandma decorated it. Rather, most properties have a homey charm. Our favorite B&B located in Madison, Wisconsin has theme rooms, including one done in all Asian décor and another inspired by a French cottage. My suggestion: check the pictures on the B&B’s website before booking your room.
