When Everything Is In Disarray

In my last blog I introduced myself to you and gave a general idea of the topics I would like to cover in housekeeping. I think that before we can even get into products or tools that will help; we need to address a common issue. That is, the state of your home may be in such disarray that you really don’t know where to start.

When things look impossible, we tend to put it off. But the more you put it off, the worse it becomes and the harder it becomes to do something about it.

So today you have to determine that you will start somewhere. It is a process and for some, it may be a very long process. But if you begin today, you will at least have made a dent and that is better than doing nothing.

My advice is to start in the room where the family gathers most. It is also most likely the room that is in the greatest need of some serious housekeeping. If you can tackle the room that not only needs it most but is the place you come together more often, you will feel more empowered to get to the rest.

There are different ways that you can tackle any room. One way is to start on the floor, by clearing it first. Then you move to shelves, cabinets, etc. You are working your way up using this method. You can also do it the reverse way, starting from the top and working your way down.

Another method is to take a garbage can and go through the room, first getting rid of waste. Then you take a bucket or basket and go through the room, removing items that don’t belong there. You put those items where they belong and then go back through the room, straightening what is left.

You could also work in sections, or one side of the room first and then the other side. Hopefully this inspires you with ideas on how to tackle your housekeeping in such a way that you don’t feel like you are looking at the project as a whole. You are taking sections or areas one at a time. That is much less overwhelming.

Then you might decide to do a room a day, a section or area a day, a room a week or whatever works best for you. Set up a schedule in which you actually plan out how you will get out from under the junk and mess. Then you will be ready for some real housekeeping.

In my next blog I will begin to talk about products and tools that can be used in different rooms of your house.
