When it is a Good Idea to Ask Yourself “What If?”

We have many of us heard that asking the “what if” question can be a trap; it CAN be a way of focusing too much on stuff that could happen and not enough on the present. Many experts will warn those of us who get stuck wondering what could happen to let go of those thoughts and try to get grounded in the present. I would like to argue, however, that asking the “What IF?” question can be a way of getting inspired and growth-focused for our home businesses.

What if you expanded your business and started gathering customers in a different town? What if you upgraded and updated your web site to take online orders? What if you were able to hire another person to help with the business? What if you were able to travel to that industry conference next year? What if you grew your income by 100% in the next four quarters? What if you were able to move out of your home and in to a store front?

Can you see how wondering “what if” can be a catalyst for growth and progress thinking in your home business? Many of us get so consumed with the daily details and with coping with the realities of our home businesses that we never fully allow ourselves to imagine what is possible. Many great growth opportunities start with a day dream. We need to ask ourselves “what if?” and allow the possibilities to unfold if we are going to be able to think progressively about our businesses.

Indulging the “what if” does not have to be a formal process, just give yourself permission to wonder and fantasize on a regular basis. Let yourself explore what your “dream” would be when you are problem solving or working at different elements of your business. It is through these dreams that many progressive steps can evolve.
