When One Sibling Is Away….

My oldest son is in the Colorado mountains this weekend, building and living in a snow cave. Their scout troop had a two hour briefing on avalanches, hypothermia, snow blindness, and frost bite. Just what a mama wants to hear.

Sometimes I am jealous of the scout trips – but not this one. Sleeping on top of and under snow? Brrr…. I like camping, but I like my nice warm bed and central heat more, thanks all the same. My fourth graders are jealous though. They are anxious for next year when they’ll be old enough for these camping trips.

To take out some of the sting, we’ve spent the day doing special things. First we hit the craft store for foam board and paper. They are both working on research projects for school. Getting the research supplies only took a few minutes, but they had fun looking at all the Easter and St. Patrick’s Day things.

Our next stop was the bakery. I let them pick out doughnuts for breakfast tomorrow and a pastry for dessert tonight. They spent about twenty minutes deciding which of the pastries looked best. Their big brother would have been impatient with them, but since he wasn’t there, it was okay. We let three other customers go in front of us while we took our time deciding.

And then we hit the store for supplies for their favorite meal of baked potatoes with lots of cheese and sour cream. I miss my oldest, but it’s also nice to have more almost one-on-one time with my other kids. And I know that, yes, next year they will be on these camping trips too. So these kinds of weekends are quickly coming to an end. I better enjoy it while I can.
