When You Need Technical Assistance

Most of us who run our own home businesses are pretty small operations. We don’t have staff support or our own IT person standing handy when we have computer questions or need technical assistance. Still, we run into bumps and problems just like any other business owner, but what can be done? Where can we go when we need some technical assistance?

Well, if you are lucky enough to have a computer or technologically savvy teenager in your household that may be all the farther you need to look! Of course, this isn’t always the case and you may face problems that require a more professional approach. Before you spend an arm and a leg on a really expensive “consultant,” consider the following ideas for finding good technical assistance…

Consider talking to the folks at the store where you bought your computer, printer, fax machine, telephone, etc. Often a qualified sales person or customer service representative can help answer some questions. You do also usually get numbers for “technical assistance” that comes with anything you might purchase new. If you’ve got plenty of time and patience, making that phone call or sending an e-mail may help you get the answers you need.

If you have a community college or trade school in your area, you may be able to find a student who is in need of practical experience. I know someone who got a permanent IT person and a good friend by going this route. Ask around and contact your local high school as well—you might be surprised at how eager and knowledgeable some of these young people are.

You might also consider a retired executives group (don’t assume that because they are older and retired, there isn’t someone who cannot help you with your technical problems), the chamber of commerce, or even checking with your kids’ school, your church, and other places you frequent to see if they know of someone who is a technical wizard.

Of course, you may not be able to get all your problems solved and questions answered for free, but a little legwork can save you money and help you network to boot!
