I know, I know, some children are just returning to school after enjoying a few weeks off for winter recess so it may seem as though I am jumping the gun a bit on spring break vacation destinations. However, I was lucky enough to spend the holidays in Hawaii with my family (a trip that was a year in the making), so needless to say I believe it’s never too early to begin planning for your next family vacation.
The following are some locations I have been researching during my hunt for the ideal spring break destination. Where will we end up? Stay tuned to find out.
Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada
Did you know this popular destination was created in 1885 as the world’s third national park? Banff is deeply tied to Canada’s natural history and is well known for its unique ecosystem. The park is highly regarded for its pristine natural beauty, but the reason it’s on our family’s “vacation destination” list is because Banff also boasts incredible access to wildlife (my young daughter LOVES animals). According to park managers, visitors are treated to daily views of a variety of animals from eagles to elk, wolves to woodchucks, fish, and fawns. It may not be “Diego’s” rainforest, but I think my 2-year-old would enjoy her stay.
The Golden Islands, Georgia
These barrier islands off the coast of Georgia are characterized by 17.5 miles of undeveloped beaches, oak trees and wild horses–all of which are wonderful attributes, but what puts this destination on our family’s list is its reputation for being a birder’s paradise.
The Golden Islands are home to osprey, wood stork (an endangered species on the island), not to mention calm waters and spectacular weather. However, the island’s feathered residents often get overlooked by visitors who make the trip to see where history was made. Yes, the island is a favorite among historians and nature lovers. But it is also a popular travel destination for die-hard fans of American royalty. JFK Jr. was married at the First African Baptist Church on Cumberland Island and The Greyfield Inn on the island is run by descendants of the Carnegie family.
