Where did all the teenagers go?

I’ve noticed a difference between life in the military as a child and as an adult. The biggest one has been the appearance of children. I’m not meaning the way they are dressed or how their hair is cut, but I’m talking about how many are around and just where did all the teenagers go?

As a child growing up on a military base we had quite a few hang-outs, one was a hill on the base, another the parks and of course the Shoppette. Why is it that when I drive through housing I never can see a single teenager in sight? There are plenty of toddlers that tend to run out in the road and you’ll see quite a few preteens and younger walking up and down the side of the road or shooting hoops, but never do I see any teens. Where do they go? They aren’t at the parks, I’ve driven by those and seen none, I don’t see them on the beaches when I actually get down there and they don’t loiter at the stores these days.

Now, I’ve heard teens sleep until noon and that’s fine but you can’t tell me they sleep all day until the moon replaces the sun. I say this because from time to time I do hear the occasional teenager out my bedroom window. I’ve stole a few glances late at night and sure enough I’d see a few of them straggling by. Maybe they really do sleep longer these days, or they’ve found the perfect hiding place that only they know about. Or maybe they just all stay at their parents house until late at night. Ha, I know that’s a laugh right, no teen likes to hang out at home. Well I guess for me it will remain a mystery, at least until my son becomes that age.
