Where to Find Free Photos

Whether you are looking for a photo to post on Facebook or you need an image to add to a school newsletter or yard sale sign, there’s a very good chance you’ll head to the World Wide Web to snag the perfect snapshot. Unfortunately, not all pictures seen on the Internet are free to copy and use as you see fit. Many images come with copyright restrictions, usage fees or other conditions.

The good news is there are also quite a few websites that feature restriction free images. These photographs are posted by amateur shooters who encourage the use of their images. Some of the most popular sources of public domain pictures include:

The National Park Service: The government run site features dozens of gorgeous restriction-free photos captured by employees of the U.S. National Park Service.

Publicdomainpictures.net: This site offers thousands of high-quality public domain photos that can be used for personal and commercial use and the best part-—they are free.

Public-Photo.net: All the photos featured on this site are restriction free and can be cut, copied, and reused at no charge.

Easy Stock Photos: This user-friendly site features tens of thousands of free images that are organized in neat image galleries.

GIMP: The popular site features an enormous selection of royalty-free photos, organized by keyword.

Public Domain Photo Gallery: This is the site I turn to if I need a stunning black-and-white image to add to a personal project. The free photos are organized by category and are among the best on the web.

Photos8.com: You could get lost looking though all of the incredible high-resolution public domain photos and wallpapers featured on this site. Unlike some other sites, Photos8.com allows you to use its images for any purpose, including commercial.

Morguefile: A favorite with bloggers and other online content contributors, this site offers free images that you can use in your personal creative endeavors or commercial projects.
