Where’s God When I’m S-s-s-cared? (1993)

moreveggiesThe first VeggieTales video ever begins with “Tales From the Crisper.” Junior Asparagus (voiced by creator Phil Vischer’s wife, Lisa) has stayed up past his bedtime to watch a scary movie about a monster named Frankencelery. When it’s time to go to bed, he imagines that everything around him is turning into monsters. Climbing into bed, he is scared to go to sleep, thinking that he’ll get eaten alive.

At that moment, Bob and Larry show up in his room to bring him a message. “You don’t have to be afraid,” they tell Junior, and then they sing him a song, the refrain of which is, “God is bigger than the Boogeyman. He’s bigger than Godzilla or the monsters on TV. God is bigger than the Booeyman and He’s watching out for you and me.”

The sincere tomato goes on to explain that God created all of us, and has all power. He would never let a monster come after us. When we put our trust in God, we can sleep well at night, knowing that God is on our side.

Then Junior gets a surprise – Frankencelery shows up in his closet! But wait, it’s not Frankencelery; it’s the actor who portrays him. He explains that he’s not really a monster, but pretends to be one for his job. Junior is then able to go to sleep, knowing that the things on TV are just pretend and that God is in His heaven, watching over us.

In the middle of each VeggieTales video, we are treated to a “Silly Song with Larry.” It’s the part of the show where Larry comes out and sings a silly song. On this video, we hear “The Water Buffalo Song,” which, I admit, is one of my favorites.

The last segment is the story of Daniel in the Lions’ Den. Daniel is played by Larry the Cucumber, and we go with him as he performs his duties in the palace. Jealous of his favor with the king, some of the palace scallions decide to do away with him. Their planning meeting is hysterical, done in song with a catchy tune. The best line: “We could use him as a footstool or a table to play Scrabble on, then tie him up and beat him up and throw him out of Babylon.” Of course they settle for the lions’ den route, and we are familiar enough with the story to know how it ends. Pay close attention to the voice of the angel who comes to comfort Daniel; believe it or not, that too is Lisa Vischer, who voices Junior Asparagus. She’s a very multitalented lady.
