Who’s Easier—Boys or Girls?

Let’s face it, parenting is tough. Whether you’re parenting boys or girls, you’re going to be met with challenges and joys.

Whether boys or girls are easier to parent depends upon a number of factors. The personality of the parent and child is a major determinant. If you’re a high strung parent, your children will likely be high strung as well. If you’re a snuggler, your children will likely be snuggle bugs too, unless of course your spouse is not, in which case it could go either way. It also depends upon the inherent personality of the child.

In my own experience, my son was easier in some ways than my daughter and visa versa. Both of my children have taken on personality traits of my husband and I. Some of them are easy going traits, and some of them can best be described as “difficult.” So in my case, I’d say both of my children have been difficult and easy in different ways and in different situations.

For instance, my son was much more snuggly as a baby. My daughter, in contrast, was independent from the start. She slept independently, which made her easier to parent in that sense, since my son wanted to be held much more. However, part of this difference could also be because my daughter was born second, and subsequent children are often forced to be more independent simply because there is another sibling in the house.

My son, however, was less active than my daughter at an early age. He crawled later, walked later, and was much more content to sit. In contrast, my daughter was active from the start. She’s the climber in the family and constantly keeps me on my toes. In this case, my son has been easier to parent.

Kids are a joy, regardless of sex. Although one sex may be easier to parent for one mother, the opposite sex may be easier for another.
