Why Celebrity Parents Are Going Gaga Over Munchkin

Most parents of babies and toddlers are familiar with the Munchkin brand. The company offers affordable products for the adorable droolers in your life; but what surprised me recently is the number of celebrity parents who have come out to endorse Munchkin products. Perhaps, I’m just jaded. After all, these are the same crop of celebs who don’t bat an eyelash at dropping $300 on a single pair of cotton PJs—for a newborn.

Maybe, that’s why they are looking to spend less in other areas. Take for example, Munchkin’s new Jelly Bean slings and carriers. They were just unveiled at a Kids Expo last week, but some celebrity moms such as Naomi Watts are already showing off their new bundles of joy in them. (The rest of us non-famous parents will have to wait for them to hit shelves later this season.)

The new Jelly Bean line is touted as offering comfort, safety, and durability to parents on the go. The Jelly Bean Reversible Sling that is all the rage with A-list moms has two different prints and it can be used in five different carrying positions without the use of buckles or rings. It is supposedly perfect for swaddling newborns and is convenient and discreet for breastfeeding as well.

Meanwhile, the Jelly Bean Cargo Sling offers a double-buckle reinforced strap for safety, as well as breathable mesh and an extra-padded shoulder strap for comfort. What I see as the bonus with this new sling is that it comes with cargo pockets that you can use to stick diapers or other accessories in. The company says the sling’s pockets eliminate the need to carry a separate diaper bag, but the pockets don’t appear to be that generous (to me anyway). Perhaps if you are just taking a walk to the park, but certainly not if you are going to be gone from home for an extended period of time.

Munchkin also has a new Jelly Bean Carrier. I must have experimented with at least a half dozen different carriers when my daughter was an infant. I could never find one that both she and I felt comfortable with. This new Jelly Bean one has a head support for newborns facing inward that can also be used as a back support for toddlers facing outward. It also comes with a padded belt, which I found appealing especially if you plan to use the carrier as your child continues to pack on the pounds. Another neat feature is the storage pocket where you can place keys or little snacks when you are out and about.
