Why Choose Adoption

I have found from talking to others who have adopted that there are some primary reasons why people choose adoption over having a child naturally or biologically.

For many couples adoption becomes the only option in having a child and building a family. Often it is couples who have for years tried to conceive a child only to find that one of them had infertility problems. The couple then may try fertility treatments such as In-vitro fertilization or In Uterine Insemination. However, these then fail as well. The couple, after time to grieve this loss, move on to adoption as the means to complete the family. Some couples move to adoption forgoing fertility treatments, since often times insurance does not cover the cost. If a couple is going to spend a large some of money, they feel more secure in knowing that by going through adoption they will at least have a child or baby in the end. Fertility treatments are not a guaranteed to be successful.

Homosexual couples who want to build a family will also opt to adopt. As well as individuals who are single, may not have found a suitable partner, but still will like to parent a child.

There are also individuals who have always had a desire to adopt a child, even after having biological children of their own. Their purpose is more on the line of being altruistic, and helping a child who is need of good home.

At times women after having children biologically end up having their tubes tied and or men have a vasectomy. Only to find that a marriage did not work out, they get re-married and want to have children with their current spouse. The couple decides to adopt a baby instead of having the procedures reversed.

For me and my husband we are in the category, as so many other couples, that we could not have children naturally. After many years of trying to conceive we were told that the only way we would be able to have children were through In-vitro fertilization or even a sperm donor (You should have seen my husbands face when he heard that one.) The news was heartbreaking. We also both at the time worked in New York City but lived in New Jersey. We were under my husbands insurance and it does not cover In-vitro Fertilization. We would have to put out a lot of money if we were to pursue treatments, and we were worried that it may not work out. For us it really did not take much time before we decided to pursue adoption. As I mentioned earlier we wanted to feel secure that if we were going to be spending the money we would have a baby. Now, looking at Connor, I know this was the way we were to have built a family together. Connor is as much my child as if I gave birth to him. It’s a thought I have daily. We were meant to adopt.

About Kathy Sheldon

My name is Kathy Sheldon and I live in Northern NJ with my husband, Jeff, my 15 month old son, Connor, two cats, a bird, and the newest addition our 10 week old Bernese Mountain puppy. I graduated from Buffalo State College and then went on to earn a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology from Pace University. Prior to my son being born I worked for 7 years in a Domestic Violence Shelter in New York City with women and their children. I counseled women and their families individually and in groups. For the last five years at the shelter I was in administration and management. I resigned from my position as Director of Client Services after Connor was born because my commute into New York City was too long from where we live. When my son Connor was 4 months old I decided to start my Direct Sales Business with the Traveling Vineyard. I chose In Home Wine Tastings because I really enjoy wine and wanted to learn more about it. It was then that I started to write my first blog, "Traveling Wine Adventures." Since my son was adopted and my husband, and I had such a wonderful experience with our adoption and American Adoptions, I inquired with them about doing Adoption Home Studies and was hired contractually in September. I also have started to do Adoption Seminars locally for prospective adoptive parents. In August of 2005 I started my second blog "Working Moms Wanted". I started it because I found myself in place like many new Moms, needing to find work but not knowing if it would be better to work out of my home or get an outside job. My husband and I are socially active people and enjoy spending a lot of our time with families in the neighborhood and our own families. In addition we enjoy many hobbies. I enjoy running, reading, writing, cooking, and of course spending time with Connor.
