Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People? Part 2

null

Yesterday we saw how we need to make the most of the freedom we have to further the cause of the gospel, by taking the opportunities we have.

As Paul underwent his imprisonment not only the guards came to hear the gospel message but other Christians were encouraged and trusted in God because of the faith they saw in Paul. What’s more, rather than them cowering in fear afraid to speak out, they actually grew in ‘courage to speak the word of God without fear’ Philippians 1:14. Plus, the numbers of believers trusting God was growing.

That’s often the way it works. As Christians suffer and go though hard times the world watches to see how they handle it. Those Christians who are being imprisoned and face death for their faith, yet refuse to be silent have an impact. People see the truth of the gospel message and of their faith in the circumstances. Sadly those of us who do not face such persecution, can tend to be most quiet and therefore less effective for the kingdom.

Paul rejoiced that whatever people’s motivations, Christ was being proclaimed, verse 18. So what had happened to Paul had ‘turned out for the greater progress of the gospel,’ verse 12.

When we look at the priorities and concerns of the world around us they are often, money and financial security, (which given the current economic crisis at present is why so many people are concerned), love and relationships, success, pleasure etc. How different is this from Paul’s priority! To him, ‘to live is Christ and to die is gain,’ verse 21.

So, while on earth Paul would continue to do God’s work and spread the gospel. When he died, he knew he would go to be with Jesus. Is your priority to serve Jesus each day wherever you are? Do you have that same security that when you die you will be with Him? We can. See John 3:16-18.
