Will The Birth Be Televised?

They met on television, courted on television, married before one of the largest television audiences in ABC’s history, and now the question is: “Will Ryan and Trista Sutter (of “The Bachelorette” fame) allow television cameras in the delivery room when they have their first child this summer?

Oh, didn’t you hear? Trista is pregnant. After two years of trying the nation’s first televised “Bachelorette” is officially with child.

“We are so happy,” Trista recently told PEOPLE Magazine.

According to the magazine, Trista is currently 14 weeks along, but doesn’t know the gender of the baby.

“I’ve had horrendous morning sickness,” she admitted to reporters, “but everyone says that is a sign of a healthy pregnancy.”

This pregnancy is one she and her husband have been reportedly anticipating for years. Trista told PEOPLE that she wanted to have a baby shortly after marrying Ryan during a televised special in 2003, though she had trouble conceiving.

Ironically, 34-year-old Trista got the good news when Ryan was half a world away. According to the magazine, Trista waited until her Colorado fireman husband returned to Denver from participating in a mountain expedition in Argentina to tell him he was going to be a daddy.

“He was completely wind burned and his lips were dry,” Trista told reporters. “We had a three-hour drive back to our home from the airport and I couldn’t wait to tell him, so I pulled him aside to a quiet part of the baggage claim area and told him there.”

As for Ryan he says, “I am happy to be able to finally be a dad.”

Granted, a lot of attention has been paid to Ryan and Trista’s public love affair and the fact that they had been trying for quite some time to have a child, but a televised birth? Sure, I am a fan of TLC’s “A Baby Story,” but for some reason there’s something different about watching Jane Doe from Pennsylvania push out her first child than watching “The Bacholerette” do so. Call it a double standard…

No formal word has been given regarding the baby’s birth, though I bet the executives at ABC are already in negotiations with the couple.
