Winter Craft Ideas with Mittens

Brrrrrrr! Is it cold where you live? It’s been pretty cold around here! We even need our gloves, and that gives me an idea. We can make some cute mitten crafts. We can make ornaments that look like mittens, greeting cards that look like mittens, and all kinds of other stuff. It’s pretty easy, and these projects turn out cute.

For these projects, you can use the simple mitten pattern found in the article, “Make a Snowman even if You don’t have Snow!” You can make the pattern small, medium, or large, for the different projects, or you can just trace the outline of your hand. Hold your fingers closed for mittens, or open them up and trace between them if you want to make gloves. Trace little brother’s or sister’s hands for smaller sizes and a grown up’s hand for larger sizes. Another simple way is to draw a big, upside down letter “U,” and then make a smaller upside down “U” on the side for the thumb.

Mittens Ornaments

Cut four mitten shapes from felt, foam, or fabric. Glue two together, leaving the bottom open, and then glue the other two together. Glue ribbon or string to the tip of each mitten, and then tie the top ends of the ribbon together to make a bow. Hang them on your tree.

Mittens Greeting Cards

Cut two large mitten patterns out of cardstock or construction paper. Use glue or have a grown up help you staple one side closed (it works better if you close the side that does not have the thumb). If using glue, allow it to dry. Decorate your card and write a message inside.

Mittens Winter crafts*You can glue some felt on if you want fuzzy mitten cards.

Mitten Placemat

Draw an extra large mitten on a piece of craft foam, vinyl, contact paper, or fabric. Cut it out, decorate it, and you’ll have an instant winter placemat.
