Winter Woolens: Making Wool Crafts With Kids

sheep

I love wool.

I love it in the morning and the afternoon, and I love to get it for Christmas and for my birthday. This Christmas, I got a bag of wool from my sister in law. I have a bag of unwashed wool in my workshop from the sheep at the local petting zoo. I just really, really like wool.

Oddly enough, I also dislike knitting. I’m very left-handed, so doing anything with my right hand is a bit of a challenge. I much prefer crochet, since it only involves one hand.

So what do I do with wool, in addition to crocheting? Over the next week, I’ll take you on a journey through some wonderful wool crafts to make. Some of them can easily be done with other fibers too. They’re very simple, because I like simple. I don’t have time for complex crafts, and I have no patience for patterns.

Many wool and yarn crafts are free form. They don’t require a pattern, and you’re free to invent what you’d like to create. This makes them ideal for younger children, who are often like me: they just like to create, no patterns required.

Handicrafts are experiencing a bit of a resurgence. We seem to be remembering that we have forgotten so many practical skills like knitting and crocheting, and we’re looking for ways to get them back. Handicrafts are a wonderful way for children to experience creating art. They’re also a good way to work on fine motor skills. As children get older, they progress from more basic forms of knitting like finger knitting into crocheting and knitting projects that are much more demanding of patience and skill.

This winter, come on a journey through wool crafts with me, as we explore felted crowns, finger knitting, needle felting, and wet felting projects that you can do with your children!
