Wives Who Work From Home

We’ve talked about the career wife versus the housewife, but what about the housewife who works from home? I’m one of those. I work as a consultant and a contractor. I work out of my home office taking online writing jobs as well as technical writing jobs for local companies. We both had careers when we met and we both worked full time for a living. It suited our lifestyle for several years, but after our daughter was born – the priorities for both of us changed.

Shifting Goals

Our personal goals shifted with the main priority being at home with our daughter. Fortunately, my employer hosted layoffs about seven weeks after my daughter was born and I got to be in the layoffs. The layoff sounds like a bad thing, except for us it was actually a fortunate mistake. My severance package helped with our financial security for the next year without too much concern.

As my daughter got older and more mobile, I found myself longing for more to do that was mentally stimulating. I went back to school and started working on my degree. My writing, something I always did for business or just for fun, became an outlet. An English instructor urged me to submit something I wrote to a local magazine and that, as they say, was the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Working From Home

When I first got started, it was a lark. I didn’t take it as seriously as I might have. We didn’t need the income specifically, so I was able to pick and choose the types of jobs I was interested in writing. Over time, I began to build up the business and that was great, too. But as the work grew, so did the strain that it created.

We’re going to talk about some things that apply to our marriages and our status as wives who work from home. For more information on working from home, be sure to check out our Home Business blog.
