Working In A Winter Wonderland

If you live anywhere in the Northeastern United States, you are probably still digging yourself out from the most recent snowstorm. It seems like almost everywhere in the United States has been getting a lot of snow this winter, and it’s not done snowing yet. Even though the groundhog predicts that spring will come early this year, there is a good chance that we will see one or more major winter storms before it does.

All of this wintry weather has me feeling rather thankful that I work at home, and not just because I did not have to try to shovel the driveway or drive to work this morning. The lifestyle of a home-based professional provides a few benefits that really come in handy during this season of snow days and sniffles. Of course, one of the more obvious of these benefits is the lack of a commute. Today I saw some pictures online of people trying to get to work on snow-covered roads and it made me remember just how scary it is to drive in the snow. In the past, I have traveled to work many times in the snow and I can honestly say that despite all of that “practice”, it never got any less stressful.

Another good thing about working from home at this time of year is that I can (sniff) get my work done (cough) if I have a cold, and I won’t get any of my co-workers sick. On days like today when my little boy and I both have the sniffles, I do not have to worry about making a judgment call on whether to send him to day care or not, nor do I have to miss work to stay home with him because I am already here. I can imagine that in a few years when he is old enough to be in school, I will be giving thanks for being able to spend time playing outside with him when he has a snow day.

Being a home-based professional is great in many ways, especially during the winter. When I look out the window and see the snow falling, I can enjoy its quiet beauty instead of saying “No, not again!” What is your favorite thing about working at home in a winter wonderland?
