As an avid photographer, it can be challenging to exercise patience for camera shy subjects… especially if you are related to them. Still, a little humility can go a long way when you are trying to get a shy person to pose for the camera. After all, smiling into a lens can be a nightmarish experience for individuals who freeze up when a camera is pointed at them. What’s more, there’s no way you are going to be able to capture a frame worthy shot if you are working with a reluctant model.
If you are put in a position where you have to snap photos of timid subjects, take some time to ease into the session. Chat up your subject and allow him or her to get comfortable with you and the idea that you will be taking shots while you continue your conversation. Once the person lets his guard down, consider offering the following tips for taking flattering shots:
Relax: Working with a relaxed subject will make your photo session infinitely easier. Remind your model to breathe and think happy thoughts. You want to avoid having your subject overthink a smile or pose, as forced movements often yield terrible pictures.
Keep it Simple: As an amateur photographer, it is unlikely that you will get the chance to photograph a professional model. When working with everyday subjects, don’t hesitate to provide advice for striking just the right pose. For example, you’re more apt to capture a flattering full-length shot if you instruct your subject to turn her body to one side while positioning her hips at a 45-degree angle to the camera. Next, have her place her front foot forward so it is at the 12 o’clock position while keeping her back foot at the three o’clock position. Finally, have your subject move her shoulders slightly forward and place one or both hands on her hips. This is a classic red carpet pose that is used to showcase a person’s body in the most flattering light.
