Yoga in Midlife

Yoga is a practice that can be enjoyed by men, women and children of all ages. If you are interested in trying yoga, but hesitate due to age, you should know that there are many benefits to midlife yoga.

As we age, certain physical challenges seem inevitable. Problems such as menopause will affect all women. Also at this time of life, problems that include osteoporosis, fatigue and general aches begin to take hold.

Yoga is the perfect remedy to a range of problems that plague people in midlife. Yoga helps reduce stress, improve insomnia and relieve headaches. If you are feeling fatigued, the rejuvenating benefits of yoga are perfect for increasing your energy level. Yoga also helps with health related issues, such as arthritis, osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes.

Although yoga is suitable for all ages, the level of practice and intensity tends to shift with age. Middle aged and older women may be less inclined to try the more adventurous asanas and this is fine. Stick with the restorative poses and gentle stretches.

It’s important to remember that one of the benefits of yoga is that it can be modified to fit your needs. If you are a woman (or man) in midlife, you may find you enjoy the restorative benefits of yoga more than the physical challenge.

Another important factor to keep in mind is there is no competition in yoga. Each person works at her own pace, which can change over time, or even from day to day. Do not attempt to keep up with the twenty-something’s in the class. Pushing beyond your individual flexibility level can result in injury.

Modifications and props can help achieve the poses in yoga. Try using straps, blocks, blankets or cushions in your practice and modify poses, as needed. Your yoga instructor can show you modifications for any asana.
