Yoga Poses: Revolved Side Angle Pose

Revolved side angle pose (Parivrtta Parsvakonasana in Sanskrit) is an intense twisting pose that is used in many yoga practices. There are several seated and standing twist poses in yoga. This is a standing twist.

In most classes, you will move into this pose from downward facing dog pose. As in most yoga sequences, the pose is done first on the right side and then on the left. Beginning in downward facing dog, move the right foot up and next to the right hand on the mat.

The left heel is lowered to the floor with the leg straight. The right knee is bent with the knee over the ankle and the thigh parallel with the earth. As you lower into the twist, bring the left hand to the floor next to the right foot and bring the right arm to the sky.

On the inhale, deepen into the pose and on the exhale, twist a bit more to the right. This opens the chest and creates a more intense twist. As you are able, begin to look up toward the raised hand. Hold for a few moments and then gradually untwist out of the pose and return to downward facing dog.

The entire sequence is then repeated on the left side of the body. You will soon see a pattern in yoga poses in which the poses are repeated on both sides of the body. This is done to keep balance in the body.

There are many benefits to revolved side angle pose. This asana opens the chest and shoulders. Twists also work to detoxify the body and internal organs. Muscles strengthened by revolved side angle pose include the legs, hamstrings and hips.

As in all yoga asanas, there are variations to revolved side angle pose. Sometimes beginners or people with reduced flexibility have difficulty with reaching the hand to the floor in the twist. A block can be used for this. If you can’t get your back foot flat to the floor, the heel can be lifted a little and gradually lowered as your flexibility increases.
