Yoga Props: Yoga Blocks

If you are shopping for yoga supplies, you may have seen yoga blocks and wondered if you should get them. Next to the yoga strap, the block is the most commonly used prop in yoga. Beginners as well as more advanced practitioners sometimes use these blocks as they are learning new and more difficult poses.

Some yoga classes and beginning yoga DVDs use blocks in the practice. When you sign up for a new class, ask what props are used and if they are provided. The cover or description of the DVD should mention what props are used, such as blocks or straps, so you know what to expect. If you do purchase blocks, you’ll need two, since some poses require the use of one block in each hand.

In some cases, the gym or studio where you practice may have props for students to borrow. However, this is not always the case. In addition, if you practice at home, even in between class days, you may want to have your own props to use at home.

Blocks are useful for learning new poses and performing the asanas correctly when learning new poses. If you aren’t very flexible and are having trouble with some asanas, your yoga instructor may suggest blocks to help enhance your practice. The use of blocks can take the pressure off the joints and muscles, so you are able to perform the poses.

When shopping for blocks, there are a few things to look for. One is the materials used in making blocks. There are several types on the market, such as foam, wood or bamboo. Choose blocks that are specifically designed for the practice of yoga because these are designed to hold your weight.

The size of yoga blocks is pretty standard, although there may be slight variations, depending on the brand. The usual dimensions are nine inches by six inches and three inches wide. The blocks are used on the long or short ends, depending on the pose and needs of the student.
