Bikram yoga is a form of yoga practice that is also known as hot yoga. The method was developed by Bikram Choudhury, a yoga master who learned yoga in his native India, moved to the US and developed his unique method in California.
This form of yoga is known as hot yoga due to the environment of the practice. Bikram yoga is done in a studio that is heated to 105 degrees. The heat serves a few functions, to promote sweating to remove toxins and to increase flexibility.
The theory is that in the heated room, a deeper stretch is achieved. This increases flexibility and works to relieve stress.
In Bikram yoga, 26 poses and breathing exercises are used to stimulate and restore the joints, organs and muscles. Blood circulation is increased, as well as lung and heart function. Oxygen is brought to the muscles and organs of the body through the breathing (pranayama) exercises used in the Bikram method.
In addition to the heat, the practice is rigorous. I have a friend who takes a Bikram class, which lasts 90 minutes. I haven’t tried it because I don’t tolerate heat well, even when standing in line at Disney World. I’ve worried that I’d pass out if I took one of these classes.
It turns out, my concern may be legit. Bikram practitioners tell me it is pretty common for beginners to experience a bit of lightheadedness, as they adjust to the temperature and vigorous nature of the classes. The instructor generally encourages newcomers to take breaks when needed.
There are other hot yoga classes that are not affiliated with this form of yoga. Bikram’s method is copyrighted. In order to teach the method, yoga instructors must attend training at Bikram’s Yoga College of India in Los Angeles and be certified through his organization.
