You and Your Refrigerator

I am the world’s worst about keeping the fridge clean. If I were to drop tomorrow, my dear husband would probably eat the canned ravioli that has been in there for a week…and a half. I also rarely check the temperature, am not very diligent about cleaning up juice spills, and leave jars of pickles with one little solitary pickle floating for months.

But, no more! I vow to keep my fridge clean and safe with these tips and hints:

  • Less than half of the consumers surveyed by The American Diabetic Association (ADA) and ConAgra Foundation know that the fridge should be kept at 40 degrees or below to prevent harmful bacteria from growing. If your fridge did not come with a thermometer, purchase one to monitor the temperature.
  • When cleaning your fridge, use a clean sponge with warm, soapy water then wipe dry with a paper towel. Avoid using a cleaner as it may pass the taste on to your food. And, throw the sponge away when you are finished, as they are bad about holding bacteria.
  • Clean out your fridge at least once a week. Check for food that has been hiding in back. Remember that the “Use by” date is the last date they recommend you use an item. The “expiration date” means do not eat the item after this date. If you are not sure how long it has been in there, be safe and throw it out.
  • Are there odors in your fridge? You can eliminate those by placing an opened box of baking soda in the back. Just be sure to change it every three months.
  • Help your fridge work better by taking care of it. Dust the front grill to allow for better airflow. This keeps the fridge cooler and helps it run more efficiently. Also, unplug your fridge for a few minutes and clean the back coils with a broom or vacuum to keep them clean of dust and dirt.
