For all the encouragement I give all of you home business owners to budget, schedule and plan, I think it is also important that I share that the reality is, we never know what will happen in our home businesses. We can prepare, we can plot, and we can do everything in our power to steer and guide our businesses operations, but in the end we all have no idea what is really and truly going to happen.
I am often amazed at how much unpredictability there really is in my little home business. I really do have a simple operation and there is not a lot of variables, but I am still surprised by how often things do not go the way I planned them. Often, my “interruptions” are my children or friends. I may have a weekend of work planned and someone will want to go on a picnic, to a movie, or one of my children will need my attention. Before I know it, the day is gone and there is a big, fat “O” in my log book where I track my daily income.
The only solution I know to this little reality of unpredictability is to take advantages of those times when I AM on task. If I can build up a little bit of cushion and get the work done when I can focus, as well as allow some leeway in my scheduling for those constant interruptions, I can generally keep moving forward. Still, I just never know (and neither do you) what is going to happen or what surprises might be in store for me around the corner. The trick in running a home business is to anticipate where we can and be resilient and flexible to meet all the challenges (and open ourselves up for the joys as well) of our lives.
