You Should Be Giving Your Baby Soda!

This is so bizarre and unbelievable I just had to write about it. I try diligently to make sure that my kids get their five servings of fruits and veggies a day. I do allow sugar, but generally it’s with stuff that has been homemade, and as you probably already know, I’m good at sneaking fruits and vegetables into places where you would never think fruits and vegetables could go. (Whole wheat brownies with spinach anyone?)

Never, never do I allow soda. In our family, it’s actually a rite of passage that on one’s 8th birthday, they are allowed to have some soda. Some. As in a little bit. A rare treat. In fact, I don’t even give my kids sugary juices. They mostly drink milk or water. Apparently, I’ve been doing it all wrong.

Check out this ad, by the Soda Pop Council of America from yesteryear.

It pictures a baby that cannot be more than two years old, and I would think perhaps even younger with a caption that touts the benefit of giving your child cola early in life. How early? Well, it’s never too early says the ad. In fact, you’re really doing your child a disservice by not giving them soda. “Studies”, according to the ad, have shown that babies who drink cola early in life experience more acceptance during those awkward teen years. So if you want your child to be popular, you better start them on a ‘regular and strict’ regimen of cola drinking early in life. Geesh–good thing my kids are home schooled.

So now ladies you know when grandma pops out with something absurd, this is where it came from. Either grandma drank too much soda as a little baby or she was brainwashed into thinking that it was a good idea.
