The other day I saw the most incredible scrapbook layout. It was a birthday-themed design complete with real confetti, photos, die cuts, rub ons, stamps, stickers a deflated balloon, a journaling block, some leftover streamers, brads and eyelets. Oh, and it was made by a 10-year-old.
Oh yes it was.
I suppose I should not be surprsied, these days it is not unusual to see scrapbook classes and workshops offered to kids as young as five years old. My neighbor’s daughter is in junior high and she’s been scrapping since she was eight. She’s incredibly gifted and creates layouts that blow away ones made by women three times her age.
It helps that her mom and grandma scrap too, but still, she has taken scrapping to a whole new level for someone so young. Her most recent book has a school theme. She calls it her “Student Scrapbook” and it includes keepsakes from her days in elementary school (she just started junior high a few weeks ago).
In addition to the typical class photos, yearly school portraits and a bunch of candid snapshots of her participating in school band concerts, plays and assemblies, my neighbor’s daughter has included quite a bit of journaling in her student scrapbook.
Some of the topics she has been able to work into her layouts include:
Favorite subjects: She loves math and has devoted a few pages to the subject, decorated with number stickers and stamps, plus addition, subtraction and multiplication die cut symbols. One of the layouts also includes her least favorite subjects, which happen to be science and history. On the science page she has a sticker of a frog that she cut in two pieces, as though it was getting dissected.
Favorite teachers: She journaled about why she loved these teachers the most and included a copy of a poem she wrote for one of them.
Favorite friends: It’s no surprise that a big chunk of my neighbor’s daughter’s scrapbook is dedicated to her best friends. She has several pages with candid and posed photos of her friends participating in some of the same school-related events she attended. There are a number of photos from pep rallies and school spirit day which she framed with stamps, glitter and 3D stickers.
