Book Review: Gifted by Karey White

book Brett and Susan are unable to have children of their own. Having waited what seems like forever, they are elated when they get a call—a birth family has chosen them to care for an infant they cannot raise themselves. When Brett and Susan meet the baby they will name Anna, they are immediately overwhelmed with her sweetness, and they believe no baby could be as wonder as she is. Of course, they know all new parents feel that way, but somehow, the world just seems better now that they have Anna.

As she grows, Brett and Susan begin to realize that they weren’t imagining things. The world really is more beautiful with Anna there. When she comes into the room, it seems brighter. People stop arguing. There is peace and love where chaos reigned before. And Brett and Susan have had a perfect marriage—no squabbling at all since Anna came home with them.
What is this magic their child possesses? How can they protect her from the scrutiny of others so her secret might remain safe?

“Gifted” by Karey White is a beautifully written, thoughtful read, one that made me stop and think. Do we really need to be gifted in some magical way to have this kind of effect on others? What if we learned how to share our love with others so that contention had to stop when we were around? I was particularly interested in how Brett and Susan’s marriage was blessed. Is it possible that we could create for ourselves an environment where fighting simply wasn’t allowed?

Of course, in the book, there was something amazing about Anna, and I very much enjoyed reading her story. And I hope that I can find a way to bring some of that harmony into my own life. I’m not a gifted being in that way, but maybe I can cultivate the gift of being a peacemaker, and can enrich my marriage and my family in that way.

“Gifted” was published in 2011 by Bonneville Books. I did receive a free copy for review purposes, but this did not influence my review.
