Bug Bloopers

When watching movies I love waiting until the end to see if they include a blooper strip whilst the credits roll. One of my all-time favorite movies is “Smokey and the Bandit” with Burt Reynolds and Jerry Reid. The blooper strip on this – and the sequel – are hilarious! On days when I’m feeling down these can make me laugh and raise my spirits again. If I had my way, I’d have these put on all movies because they really show the personality of the actors rather than the characters they are portraying.

Last night the boys were watching “A Bug’s Life” and like most parents, as soon as the movie finishes, I usually turn it off – which probably accounts for why I have no idea who the current top animators are at awards ceremonies such as the Oscars! Last night I didn’t for some reason, and imagine my astonishment to see that there was a blooper strip. I rewound the tape a little and rewatched the bloopers and howled with laughter. It wasn’t just the bloopers, but also that someone had the creative edge to think about doing this.

In most movies, a blooper strip could be created easily by just using some of the tape that wound up on the editor’s floor. For an animated movie however, where everything is planned and produced with precision, the bloopers are created as “extras” to the actual movie, and yet they look as if they actually happened! It doesn’t look out of place at all!

What I admire most about this process is that someone has the level of creativity to think about what kind of blooper an actor would make in the same role, and then brings that down into the animated role. The results are well worth the effort they put into them! I think we watched the blooper strip about 4 times in all last night – mostly for hubby and I. Our boys weren’t really sure what their parents were laughing at and probably thought we were suffering some kind of temporary madness!

I don’t know if any of the other Disney animated movies we possess have these blooper strips at the end, but I know one thing for sure, I’ll be letting the video/DVD run a little longer in future just to find out!
