Visiting Church

Visiting another church can be a fun and interesting time or it can turn into a nightmare. Last Sunday Mick and I were going to visit our son and his family in Sydney, so we wanted a church that was on the way. Our first step was finding one that was evangelical and at a convenient time. But it’s always a bit of a risk going to another church. Some churches are just not good at welcoming strangers. We know we‘ve encountered it before. Friendliness is something many people have commented on in regard to our church, so it’s something … Continue reading

The Biggest Problem with Church

Sometimes the biggest problem with church is people. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t like people, I do. But I’ve come across a few incidents recently where people, and I’m talking Christian people who are part of the church, have been downright rude and unfeeling towards others. One that struck me particularly and I have see this a lot is where two or more people are engaged in a conversation and another person comes up and immediately cuts into the conversation and starts to talk as though what they have it say is more important. More often … Continue reading

God’s Warnings

Sometimes as we read the bible or as we hear about people and the choices they make, we can be wonder. Often times it happens that God has given strict instructions about something and the person has ignored it. Eve and Adam in the Garden of Eden is one example that had serious consequences. Solomon was another. How can they be so stupid to ignore God’s warnings like that? I thought that this week, when I was reading about Samson in Judges 15, 16. God had provided for and given victory to Samson when the Philistines sought to do him … Continue reading

How Can You Tell a Cult?

One of the big problems in today’s world as it was even back in New Testament times and the early church is false teachers. Sometimes alarm bells seem to go off while you are listening to someone teaching but you’re not quite sure why. How can you tell if what you are hearing is false teaching and if it is a cult instead of real Biblical Christianity? Thanks to Footprints magazine here are some pointers to look out for and others I have added. A cult will invariably have a charismatic leader. You know the type of person I mean, … Continue reading

Anything We Want

If God told us we could have anything we wanted, what would we say? Would we ask for wisdom for the task we have to do? When God told Solomon to ask for whatever he wanted, 1 Kings 3:5, Solomon asked for wisdom to do the job at hand. He wanted wisdom to rule as king over the people of Israel. Do we start each day asking God for wisdom for the day ahead in the decisions we need to make and the jobs we need to do? Because that’s what we should do. Do we ask for wisdom in … Continue reading

Listen to the Music

What purpose does music and singing serve in church? To some people it may seem a pointless exercise. I mean how many other places do people gather together and sing? At a football game when passions are aroused or possibly at a karaoke night if that is your thing. So it’s not common for people to get together and sing these days, so why do it at church? Some people think it’s to set the mood. But music does more than that. When it is done properly music can set the whole tone of the service, it can reinforce the … Continue reading

Adults Can Learn from Children

Adults can learn a lot from children. Have you ever listened to a child pray? They will pray about anything and everything. They will thank God for pets and pray if their pet dog or hamster is sick. They will pray about friends or a lost toy.Adults, on the other hand, sometimes only want to pray about the big things. The little things they think they can take care of themselves. Children are mostly not afraid to admit when they need help from an adult, whether it’s to tie shoe laces or help with their homework or know what to … Continue reading

Guilt is the Worst Reason

Guilt is the worst reason for taking on any form of ministry in your church or community. Guilt is the also the worst reason for doing something you no longer have the passion and drive and commitment to do. Yet that’s what happens time and time again in churches. Christians seem to be past masters at laying guilt trips on others for what they should be doing. A friend who is a writer and has had a number of novels published, and yes they include Christian content, was criticized by her pastor husband’s congregation because she wasn’t doing the things … Continue reading

Learn from the Past

Sometimes when we are struggling on our own prayer life, it can be helpful to look back over prayers in the bible. An example that is worth looking at is the prayer of Abraham in Genesis 18:23-33. Take time now to read this prayer. There are several things to notice about Abraham’s prayer. The first is that it is other person centered. Abraham was not seeking something for himself but for the city of Sodom, not all of the city but for the righteous within that city. God had revealed to Abraham what he intended to do, verse 17. We … Continue reading

The Unpaid Worker

The attitude of some churches concerns me. Sometimes it comes from the pastor or minister in charge and sometimes it can come from the congregation. Years ago friends of ours, where the husband was assistant minister, were criticized severely because his wife wanted to keep working and therefore didn’t have time to do the things the church expected her to do, things like running the ladies’ bible study. Their main objection seemed to be ‘but that’s what the assistant minister or minster’s wife has always done.’ That is without doubt the weakest reason to ever keep doing it. Just because … Continue reading
