What are Your 2013 Genealogy Resolutions?

Typically, a New Year’s Resolution involves a goal that you intend to work toward in order to improve your life in the year ahead. Have you ever made a genealogy related New Year’s Resolution? If so, are you working on it, (or have you already given up that goal)? In the time that I have been writing for the Genealogy blog at Families.com, I’ve made a couple of genealogy resolutions at the start of the year. So far, I have completely abandoned all hope of achieving each one of them rather quickly, and have yet to reach those goals (whatever … Continue reading

What Are Your Favorite Genealogy Websites?

Genealogists can easily set up their very own genealogy blog. The hard part is figuring out what to put in it. Sometimes, it is best to go with what you know. Others like to include mostly photos with a few sentences that describe the ancestors who are in the … Continue reading

Start With Yourself – And Go From There

I recently decided to start working on my family tree. Since this isn’t something I can devote a lot of time to, I am doing it in “baby steps”. This week, that step is to see if I can find a copy of my birth certificate. I’ve heard it is good to start your research with yourself, and work from there. Sometimes, there is a strange synchronicity between what I am working on, and what life brings me. Last week, I decided to begin working on my family tree. There is a piece of advice that has been passed around … Continue reading

Finding Family History In Children’s Books

Sometimes, getting a glimpse of what life may have been like for your ancestors is as simple as turning the pages of a book. Surprisingly, even some children’s books can take you on a journey back in time to the places where your ancestors lived. Last week, I randomly happened upon a book which transported my son and I back to 1920’s England, to the world that his paternal great – grandmother may have known during her childhood. When Dylan and I go to the library, we randomly select five or so books from the children’s area. Usually, he grabs … Continue reading

Ready to get started on putting together your family tree? I’ve been intending to start mine, but so far, all I’ve managed to do is dabble in it. Perhaps if I decide to write about my progress it will inspire me to make the time to finally get started on my family tree. I’ve been writing for the genealogy blog for a few years now. In 2010, I decided to make my very first genealogical New Year’s resolutions. One of them was to finally put together my family tree. It is now 2012, and I realize that I haven’t made … Continue reading

Free Resources for Genealogy Research

Brand new genealogists, who are just starting out, have a ton of research ahead of them. How are you going to accomplish all this research, without spending a fortune to do it? One way is to start using genealogy resources that are free. Many genealogists enjoy using Ancestry.com for their research. It is one of the most popular genealogy websites, and it has a vast amount of resources. Unfortunately, it isn’t a genealogy resource that is offered for free, (except for the temporary free membership). Genealogists who are on a budget may want to try a few free genealogy resources … Continue reading

Does Anyone Still Play Marbles?

The other day, I was out in the driveway playing with my son, Dylan. While we were out there, he found a marble buried in the dirt. It is not uncommon for us to find bits and pieces of things buried here and there in our yard, as the folks who had our house before us were in the habit of burying rubbish out there. Dylan was excited about this “tiny ball” that he had found and he set about throwing it all over the place and losing it numerous times. As Dylan played with the marble, I realized that … Continue reading
