GreenHouse Foundation

The latest season of “The Voice” just wrapped and Cassadee Pope from Team Blake was named the winner.  Cee Lo Green’s team didn’t produce the winner, but Green, who was a former member of Gnarls Barkley, is still a winner.  He apparently takes is last name very seriously because he and sister Shedonna Alexander have founded the GreenHouse Foundation. The GreenHouse Foundation was founded to promote “green” education for disadvantaged children in school districts.  The groundbreaking ceremony was held at Green’s alma mater – Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy.  The students there received a donated greenhouse in which they can grow … Continue reading

Caps of Love

There is so much bad news in the world today that sometimes it amazes me when I hear about someone doing something good for others. Such is the case of Caps of Love. I just read an article about Caps of Love yesterday. It is actually the US division of something called “Bouchons d’Amour.” I don’t speech French, but I imagine that translates into…Caps of Love. Because what the charity is about is collecting plastic caps and sending them to be recycled. The money earned goes to either Federation Handisport, which uses the money to buy wheelchairs or Federation HandiChien, … Continue reading

Live Below the Line

My son is in third grade and at his school; they have a saying “Are you living above the line or below the line?” Of course, above the line is doing good things and living below the line is doing bad things, so they encourage the children to live above the line. But, living below the line isn’t always a bad thing. There is a new campaign I just discovered called “Live Below the Line.” What line are they talking about? The poverty line. Live Below the Line is asking people to change their lives for just 5 days by … Continue reading

Mr. Big Gives Back

I always loved the series “Sex and the City.” I loved the freedom the girls experience, but I also loved how Carrie kept going back to Mr. Big. We didn’t learn his name until the series finale (it was John) because he was such a larger than life character. I haven’t seen the last movie, but I know that at the end of the series, Big had told Carrie she was the one and when the first movie came out, it was revealed that Big and Carrie were married. Guess I am just a sappy romantic because I loved that … Continue reading

Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon

You might look at that title and think “Libby, you’ve gotten your blogs confused! This should be in Pop Culture, not Green Living.” But wait, let me explain. As you probably know, I love combining pop culture and green living and today, it is easier than ever. Surely you remember the game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.” The premise is that actor Kevin Bacon is the center of the universe and everyone is connected to him with six steps or less because it is truly a small world. It’s your job to try to connect an actor or actress to … Continue reading

Groupon Snags Edward Norton

I’ve written before about Edward Norton in my Green Celebrity series. This week, Groupon, the deal-of-the-day website, announced that it is teaming up with Norton for an Earth Day challenge. Norton played green for the big screen (as the Incredible Hulk), but this time, the socially conscious actor is hoping this Groupon challenge will help raise funds for green causes. Norton, who is also a U.N. Ambassador for Biodiversity, also is involved in Crowdrise, which I’ve also blogged about before. In case you missed that blog, Crowdrise is a fundraising site for charities. In addition to Norton, other celebrities such … Continue reading

Arby’s Pledges to End Childhood Hunger

I don’t know about you, but I tend to think more highly of a company when it tries to give back to the community. Not long ago, I blogged about Blessings in a Backpack, a program to send food home with children who might not otherwise get any. It breaks my heart to think about children going to bed hungry at night. Today, I was thinking about lunch and there is an Arby’s restaurant around the corner from where I work, so I looked up their web page. I had no idea they were trying to fight childhood hunger. Arby’s … Continue reading

Blessings in a Backpack

I devour PEOPLE magazine every week and have for more years than I care to say. This week, the magazine had an interesting article about people trying to help out those who are hungry, mainly children. Stats show that about 16 million children are in what is called “food insecure’ homes. That is, there are times when these children are hungry and there is no food. Tama Clapper made a vow that no child in Gillette, Wyoming (pop. 30,000) would go hungry. She was inspired when told by a school principal that about 50 of the 430 children in the … Continue reading

Create Jobs for USA

Unless you have had your head stuck in a hole, you know many, many Americans are going through tough economic times. This includes a high rate of unemployment. It is estimated that 9.1% of the U.S. labor force is unemployed. This rate goes up higher in the Hispanic community (11.3%) and even higher in the African-American community (16.7%). But, Starbucks and Opportunity Finance Network (OFN) are trying to help. OFN is a network on Community Development Financial Institutions that are dedicated to offering reasonable lending to low-income or otherwise disadvantaged people and communities. In the past few years, Starbucks has … Continue reading

What is FoodCorps?

As a mother, I worry about what my child eats. The obesity rates for children are worse than ever. Our children are eating more bad food and getting less exercise than ever. This can lead to diabetes and heart problems at a younger and younger age. FoodCorps hopes to change that by getting kids to eat healthy meals. How can that happen? FoodCorps is kind of like the PeaceCorps – for food that is. FoodCorps finds recent college graduates to volunteer to go into a limited-resource community for a year to teach about healthy living. They offer nutrition education, help … Continue reading
