For The Men: Belly Fat

We women have our thunder thighs, but men seem to have their own problems too. Belly fat is more common in men than in women. Belly fat is more commonly associated with an increased risk of some serious health problems, such as heart disease, adult-onset diabetes, resistance to insulin, stroke, metabolic syndrome, hypertriglyceridemia, sleep apnea, low LDL levels, and certain forms of cancer. As men and women age we do tend to have more fatty deposits. Concentrating on healthier lifestyles pertaining to eating and activity will help to combat this problem. Some genetics, as well, can predispose us to this, … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: The Small Stuff

Whoever said, “Don’t sweat the small stuff” was out of their mind. In life, it’s the small stuff that makes a good day great and a great day remarkable. In my experience, it is the little things in life that makes that life worth living, after all life is really just a big collection of tiny moments, glances, statements and memories – all of which are smaller parts of the collection body of work we call a life well lived. As in life as a whole, the little decisions and challenges matter greatly in the course of a weight loss … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Best Week Ever!

This has been the best week for me! I finally, after months away, found my way back to the gym. On three consecutive afternoons, from Wednesday to Friday, I worked out for a full hour. I walked briskly and slightly uphill for about half of that time on the treadmill and then spent the remaining time using individual resistance machines for my abs, arms, thighs, legs and other long-neglected muscles. Needless to say, I feel extremely tired. I have not quite arrived at the point where a workout gives off energy but I feel great about myself and hope that … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: The Start of Something

Finally! After weeks of incomplete shopping trips, take-out meals and cereal dinners we finally found the time on a weekend to menu-plan and execute a well thought out and near-perfect shopping list. Last night I made bone-in pork chops with a baked potato and applesauce. It was terrific. Tonight was crumbled sweet Italian sausage with red sauce (a can of diced tomatoes with a spoon full of tomato paste in with the sausage once cooked) over penne pasta and a salad (Yes, something green!) The great start to the week feels wonderful, even if it has been two months since … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: It Was Good While It Lasted

On Sunday, my wife and I decided to drive up to New York City to spend the day in Lower Manhattan, walking around Battery Park and cruising around New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty and the surrounding waterways. It was a beautiful day in the Big Apple, a sunny and breezy 73 degrees – simply amazing weather for a July day in the Northeast. I couldn’t pass up the chance to be out on the water with my family enjoying such perfect conditions, so we made the drive (in record time – one hour and forty five minutes from … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: On The Road

I am traveling on business today. I am in Memphis to visit my client and launch a new service. The time away from home gives me time to catch up on sleep and offers the chance to eat a multi-course upscale dinner, on the company’s dime (which always tastes good!) Before I left town, my family of four spent Sunday afternoon and early evening in Philadelphia, walking for nearly three hours along Kelly Drive. This picturesque stretch of waterfront is named for famous former resident Grace Kelly and takes visitors along The Art Museum, Waterworks complex and historic Boathouse row. … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Oh What a Week!

The new baby has been sick with a terrible cold. She is barely able to breath through her nose. It is frightening even for experienced parents. My toddler has had her own issues recently as well. She’s enjoyed a middle-of-the-night fever and has had trouble sleeping through the night. Needless to say, the last 6 days have been a struggle. My eating has been atrocious, which is aiding my drowsy mental state. I have really been out of control, snacking constantly, picking up candy bars at the grocery store checkout lane, buying a ½ gallon of Chocolate Peanut Butter ice … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: It’s no Picnic

Actually, it was a picnic! I could not bring myself to work a full day yesterday, my first back in the office since the birth of my 2nd child on Memorial Day. The weather was far too nice and my three year old too darn sweet to stay away from for over eight hours. As a result, I merely stopped at a great French bakery to pick up enough croissants and pain au chocolates for my team, dropped them off, cleaned out my email and rushed back home to surprise my girls. My darling toddler was giddy! We then packed … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: The best 8lbs I’ve ever gained

My new baby girl was born on Memorial Day. She greeted us at 1:08 am and weighed a healthy 8 lbs, 5 ounces. The routine on the home front has been as normal as something brand new can possibly be. I have been cooking well-rounded, full meals as I expected I would during my week off from work. As a result, my little family has been on a culinary tour of the globe over the last three days. On Thursday we enjoyed a taste of Mexico as I served up free-range chicken fajitas, yellow rice and tortilla chips. On Friday … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Looking for signs of spring (and my my baby)

What happened to spring? It has been pushing 90 in my neck of the woods for the past three days! While the very warm weather encourages me to eat less (which is certainly a good thing), it also instills in me an overwhelming desire to do nothing at all, save for lying on top of my bed, underneath the ceiling fan – on full blast! My neighbor stopped by today. He is the president of our Civic Association, of which I am the treasurer. He needed an account update to read out at the next association meeting, as I will … Continue reading
